The Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award is an internationally recognised accreditation scheme for young people aged 14 to 25. The award consists of 3 levels (Bronze, Silver & Gold), with four sections in each level (5 at Gold).
The award is completed by creating a personal programme of activities to satisfy the sections within each level.
Taking part in the DofE will enable young people to build their confidence, meet new people, try new things and visit new and exciting places. In particular expedition allows young people to be both physically and mentally challenged whilst completing what could be the journey of a lifetime!
Some of the benefits of the award include;
Increased self-belief and self-confidence

The expedition section of the award is the only section where you are required to work as part of a team. Working within a group of between 4 and 7 (8 for tandom ventures) you will plan, organise and complete your expedition navigating your way along your route whether that be, traversing the Caledonian Canal or exploring the Alps.
Before setting out on expedition you will be taught all you need to know to ensure you are confident in using the skills required to succeed.
The amount of time required for expedition depends on whether your completing Bronze, Silver or Gold. The table below details the duration for each expedition.
The time associated with overnight accommodation and catering is additional to the minimum daytime hours of planned activity
Schools and Youth Groups
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an excellent opportunity to accredit work already being done in your schools and youth groups. Rather than being solely academic based the Award allows all young people to achieve by doing and choosing the activities that suit their own skill level and abilities. The Award not only provides a chance for young people, its also a great chance to promote the fantastic work being done in your schools and clubs.
Challenge Expeditions works regularly with a range of organisations including several schools and youth organisations. All have different needs but all want to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. We work closely with staff to ensure the developed programme meets the needs of the young people as well as the school or organisations aims. Groups range in size from 10 right through to large expedition groups of 100 plus with multiple expedition teams. We can work with no matter how big or how small your group.
